Category 1 Food Alert for Action: All dried beans from Nigeria are banned due to potential pesticide overuse, and must be withdrawn from sale.
Message:
All dried beans originating from Nigeria are banned from import and sale in the EU, as per Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 2015/943, as amended. This is due to previous breaches in the use of pesticides in these beans. Products, such as bean meal, made from the implicated beans are also banned. These products were banned in 2015 but some products have been found on the EU market during recent checks. The photographs below are examples of implicated products.

As part of routine inspections, official agencies are requested to check for imports of dried beans originating from Nigeria. If found, the product should be withdrawn from sale and details provided to FSAI (foodincidents@fsai.ie).
Manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, caterers & retailers:
Food businesses who have been supplied with these beans should dispose of them or return implicated beans to their supplier.
Consumers:
Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated products.
