2023 Human Data

2023 Human Zoonoses Data

This report has been prepared using  the human zoonoses data published in the Annual Infectious Disease Reports by the Health Service Executive (HSE) Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

We do not report how many of these cases are foodborne. This is because when analysing human zoonoses data, it is challenging to determine exactly how many cases are foodborne due to several factors, such as:

  • Zoonotic diseases may spread through various transmission routes including food, water, animals, the environment, person to person, making source identification difficult.
  • Cases are often reported without specifying whether they are foodborne.
  • Tracing foodborne sources requires complex investigations, and sometimes this can be inconclusive.

In addition, some foodborne infections may not get captured by our surveillance systems (termed underestimation). These systems typically fail to capture cases in two distinct areas:

  • The community setting: since not all cases seek healthcare (termed under-ascertainment).
  • The healthcare setting: where there is a failure to adequately report symptomatic cases that have sought medical advice (termed underreporting).

The numbers associated with each zoonosis may vary from prior years due to continuous updates of notification data in the Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting (CIDR) system.

In light of this, please be aware that the figures for 2023 are provisional.
