The aim of this survey was to investigate the microbiological safety of ready-to-eat, pre-cut and pre-packaged fresh herbs and salad leaves sampled from retail establishments in Ireland.
The health benefits of eating fresh fruit and vegetables are well recognised, with consumers in Ireland encouraged to eat five or more portions a day.
While most consumers in Ireland are well informed about the health benefits from eating fruit and vegetables, few are concerned about the potential health risks from chemical and microbiological contamination
This survey investigated the microbiological safety of ready-to-eat, pre-cut and pre-packaged fresh herbs and salad leaves available at retail sale in Ireland. Over 1,000 samples were tested for the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.
