This is an assessment of the safety of new and emerging food processing technologies.
The report addresses the questions that the FSAI asked its Scientific Committee. It also provides a template for the proportionate and consistent appraisal of new and emerging processing technologies that will both protect public health and support technological innovation by the food industry in Ireland. Two examples are provided to illustrate the appraisal process envisaged.
The scope of this report is confined to the appraisal of new and emerging processing technologies for food preservation, including any associated changes in nutritional value and/or safety when compared to traditional processes. It is without prejudice to the novel food authorisation process set out in Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 and associated Commission Implementing Regulations.
